Thieves use Google Earth to steal the expensive koi carp. Police believe criminals use the internet mapping system to identify the pool.

Twelve times the theft of exotic fish and pond equipment, which some millions of dollars worth, occurred in the East Yorks England during the period of three weeks.

Humberside Police, Sam Gregory said all evidence indicates the perpetrators used the Internet to find their targets.

Google Earth provides satellite photos detailed enough to see what's in the back yard of others.

"Google shows what's in your garden, and you can see the people in the pool," said Gregory PCSO.

"One of the target is a low hedge and in the corner so as not to be seen. Unless you are standing right next to the wall, you will not be able to hear water flowing."

Robert Barnes lost four koi are expensive. Male 65 years said: "They took a smaller fish, perhaps because they are much longer out of water".

"My neighbor said he saw two young men with bicycles and boxes on top and a large black net."

Nigel Dawson (40) woke up one morning to find an expensive filter system and 13 koi had been taken from the back garden.

He said: "I am devastated. I do not see or hear anything."

A spokesman said Google is only one provider of satellite imagery. He said: "Google Earth is built from information available in the world of commercial satellites and public sources.

"Thus, Google Earth does not create a significant increase in security risks, given the widespread availability of commercial satellite imagery high resolution in every country in the world.
